HSM sponsor checklist: what to verify before applying

A practical checklist for professionals considering the Highly Skilled Migrant route in the Netherlands.

Before you apply to a company for HSM sponsorship, verify a few things. First, confirm the company is a recognised sponsor. The IND maintains a public register — you can search by company name. Only recognised sponsors can apply for your residence permit.

Check the salary. Your offer must meet the IND thresholds for your age and category. For 2026, the standard rate is €5,942 per month (30+) or €4,357 (under 30). Variable bonuses and holiday allowance don't count. The employer must provide a valid employment contract.

Education and experience matter. The IND typically expects a bachelor's degree or equivalent, or five or more years of high-level professional experience. Healthcare professionals may need BIG registration. Your role should align with your qualifications.

Documents you'll need: valid passport, antecedents certificate if required, and from the employer — employment contract and proof of recognised sponsor status. Family members need marriage or relationship documentation. Always check the latest IND checklist before applying.

Finally, don't rely on a single application. Apply to multiple companies, track your outreach, and follow up. Companies that don't post jobs still hire — they hire people who reach out with the right message. Deurtal helps you find and contact them.
